Why UI child health institute is exploring education without borders – Director, Prof Amodu

The Director, Institute of Youngster Health and fitness of the College of Ibadan, Professor Olukemi Amodu, speaks about the institute’s target and aspirations in this interview with TOLUWALOPE KAREEM

What is the University of Ibadan Institute of Boy or girl Health and fitness all about?

The Institute of Youngster Health and fitness was set up in 1960 for the Nigerian kid. Our big emphasis is exploration on little one wellness, and we have been doing that for 60 years now. In recent years, we have been accomplishing a ton far more perform on analysis and teaching, not only on small children-related ailments but also on adolescents and grown ups. Most of our study is on kid wellness and adolescent well being but we know that the basis of most health and fitness situations and issues that we see even in outdated age are from childhood. So, we have been growing our investigation into diseases that manifest among the grown ups. We also have out investigation on genetics and social behavioural overall health scientific tests.

Apart from researches, does the institute do any other factor?

The ICH has a few principal thrusts – analysis, coaching, and solutions. Pertaining to analysis, we have out a number of experiments on boy or girl health and fitness, adolescent health, genetics, social and behavioural well being. On instruction, we have numerous post-graduate programmes. We have master’s programmes in Community Well being and PhD in Boy or girl and Adolescent Health. We also have a master’s programme in Community Overall health Biotechnology and a PhD programme.

These programmes are one of a kind in Nigeria since we are the only institution that graduates students in MPH Baby and Adolescent Overall health and M.Sc. General public Well being Biotechnology. So, we are not just initial in Nigeria but in Africa as very well. This is an vital part of ICH. So, we prepare learners, and we also do neighborhood services. We also have immunisation clinics.

How did the COVID-19 pandemic impact on the operations of the institute?

When I assumed business office as Director in August 2019, the issue I requested myself was: How can we make our worldwide collaborators influence us at the institute? How can we get them to assist educate? We saw the distinction in the effectiveness of students and our graduates simply because of this interaction. So, we felt the need to provide them closer to us and this birthed the concept of e-classroom.

We wished intercontinental collaborators to turn out to be an integral portion of our instructing personnel at the institute and we had commenced on that path. And the following matter was how to provide them nearer and make them teach through roundtable discussions. That was how we arrived up with the concept of the e-classroom.  Apparently, the e-classroom is a lot more pertinent now since of COVID-19. When we commenced out in 2019, there was no COVID-19. The principal cause why we desired an e-classroom was to consider gain of our collaborations outside the house Nigeria.

Is there a tale driving the collaboration amongst the institute and FCMB?

I will say that FCMB is a bank of the persons and around the many years we have witnessed what FCMB has done in our natural environment and in Nigeria as a full, so we thought they could enable us out. With that in thoughts, we approached FCMB, and I am so happy we did mainly because we experienced such a good reaction. I think it is thrilling that we can get this wander with each other with FCMB since it is bringing schooling closer to students.

We have been in a position to work together through this project and trust has been crafted. I hope that this will continue simply because we have a great deal to do alongside one another for the profit of modern society. We have a large amount of innovations that we can deliver to educating and I hope that FCMB will keep on to partner  us.

How do you gauge the affect of the institute?

We have had some check operates applying the e-classroom and students are really benefiting from it. In the past one 7 days, we have had lectures there. Apart from learners, it has also been helpful to lecturers. It will be useful to communities specifically due to the fact we do a whole lot of research. Most of the time, our investigation is just turned into papers that gain only the tutorial neighborhood. But we are preparing to have what we contact webinars, where by we can educate folks about what we do below at the clinic. There are techniques in which we can do this kind of things and undertaking them out so that men and women can see that this is how you need to acquire care of your babies and so on. So, we prepare to have webinars exhibiting what we do at the clinic and carry this to the inhabitants.

I assume what excites me most is that we have a hybrid classroom that delivers education without borders. There are no restrictions to how knowledge can be transferred. One of the leading lecturers we have on our list is an emeritus professor from Sweden. She is so excited about this job due to the fact she does not get to vacation considerably. She employed to do a ton of research in West Africa and now her traveling is restricted because of to COVID-19 restrictions. So, this is remarkable to me mainly because lecturers get pleasure from teaching and pupils are exposed to intercontinental specialists. The e-classroom offers a platform for college students to ask thoughts, engage in roundtable conversations, challenge worldwide lecturers and the lecturer can problem them as well. This is an innovation and challenge for us at the Institute of Child Well being and we will transform this to alternatives.

What does the upcoming hold for ICH?

I would say that ICH has been proactive and impressive in various means, in particular in the place education. As talked about earlier, our master’s programme in General public Wellbeing is the first in Nigeria and very first in Africa. We do youngster and adolescent health and fitness. So, we broke the ceiling with that. Then the master’s in Public Health Biotechnology is wanting at software of genetics in wellbeing and conditions, which is one more to start with. Yet again, we have this e-classroom, and its rewards are enormous. I see a upcoming that is promising because we put ourselves at the forefront of excellence. We aim to hold pushing forward and not finding slowed down by factors around us.

So, I see ICH in the up coming five several years as a great place to be. There is a ton we can do in Nigeria with ground breaking suggestions and having partners like FCMB who can assistance us make them a truth makes me content. I see ICH as a wonderful put to be in the subsequent 5 many years. Immediately after the up coming 5 a long time, we will be capable to glance ahead once again and say we are hunting at the following 10 years. I can see fantastic factors going on for us at the Institute of Kid Health and fitness.
